Hey Bryan! You probably don't remember me but I served in Ecuador around the same time you were there. Name is Brecon Powell. I was just surfing the web for ice fishing pictures of Henry's lake and thought hey that guy looks familiar! I'm going ice fishing there this weekend. Have you been back to Ecuador? I forget your last name. You can find me on facebook. Get a hold of me next time you are in Idaho and we'll go fishing. Take care.
ReplyDeleteYep I remember you! I'll totally take you up on the fishing thing. I checked out your pictures on Facebook (very entertaining by the way!) and it looks like you've got a few pretty good spots! -and likewise, if you ever find yourself bored in the Tri-Cities, WA, you know who to call :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd probably like Roughfish.com if you'd like come check it out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! I'm always looking for more fish people to be nerdy with :) That looks like a pretty cool site.
ReplyDeleteHi, I've noticed a few mistakes on here. Firstly, the "pacific sanddab" is just a larger speckled sanddab. Notice the round caudal fin, smaller mouth, colouration. Your blue rockfish looks like a deacon rockfish, or maybe even a black rockfish. I'm thinking deacon because of the dark 'TV static' pattern. I'm not sure if you are aware, but steelhead are anadromous coastal rainbow trout, I see you've listed them as separate. A large majority of rainbow trout from the Vedder River migrate to the ocean. The grass pickerel looks more like a chain pickerel.
ReplyDeleteKauveh, thanks for your thorough review here. I'm always open to second opinions. That said, I reject almost all of your claims here :)
DeleteThe "Pacific Sanddab: is in fact a Pacific and not a Speckled. The individual in the picture is larger than the maximum size for Speckled, and note the proportionally larger head and eyes than on a Speckled. Coloration is never a reliable indicator here, as they can change their coloration to match their surroundings.
I'll give you the Deacon Rockfish one, as that species was only just described in 2015 and split from Blue Rockfish. That photo was taken well before that split occurred, so at the time it really was classified as a Blue. I just hadn't bothered to make the name change on here. I've corrected it now.
I actually did my master's thesis on the migration and physiology of Steelhead Trout. So yes, you could say I am aware that steelhead are anadromous Rainbow Trout. I also don't have them listed as separate as you've claimed, if you look closer. I have the species Oncorhyncus mykiss listed as species number 2. I then thought it would be fun, since this species varies so much throughout its range, to count different life history variants and color morphs etc as sublistings under the general species listing. Hence the Vedder River trout pictured listed as number 2D. I've also got species number 2 there broken down by subspecies (O. mykiss gairdnerii, and O. mykis irideus). I've done similar things with my listings for O. clarkii and O. nerka subspecies and variants, as well as a few hybrids. But only full species count as their own number.
Lastly, the Grass Pickerel is definitely a Grass Pickerel. There are no Chain Pickerel in Washington State, but there are a few well documented populations of Grass Pickerel, which is where this individual came from.
-Bryan
